The Beer Hall

back from the frozen north

Well, not so frozen, but it was snowing in the Hudson Valley when we left Sunday morning to return to the Island. We passed the holiday in the little hamlet of Rhinecliff, a little train stop on the Amtrack line north of the City right on the Hudson River. Since the gas prices [...]

bier magazine

At the Int’l Great Beer Expo I met a young lady who is launching a new beer focused web site. The web site is called Bier Magazine and bases its operation out of Manhasset. One thing that you’ll get from Bier Magazine that you won’t find here is pictures of beautiful women. [...]

survival of the cooperators

Keith sent me a link to an article that appeared in Cell about yeast behavior and its implications for our understanding of evolution. The essential point of the article is that cooperation is better than competition. We are always told that in nature it’s the survival of the fittest; well, that idea needs some qualification. [...]

great international beer expo

The Starfish guys have done it again. The International Great Beer Expo last Saturday was, in general, a success. I had a good time and so did the other who showed up to be treated to a sampling of some great beers from around the world. From a craft perspective, the Expo [...]

local brew first

The new issue of Beer Advocate magazine arrived yesterday (Volume II, Issue X). The Alstrom brother’s editorial is titled “Kickin’ it Local.” They remind beer drinkers that we should support our local beer scene. They assume that we know the reasons why this is good, but I’m not so sure that we [...]

new podcast, episode #108 - "brooklyn beer in bellport"

In case you didn't see it on Radio Beer Hall (or the front page of LIBS), there's a new edition of my Long Island-focused beer podcast (#108). Give it a listen. Cheers!

Canterbury Ales in Oyster Bay is pretty decent. I believe that they have 9 taps(about half of them are seasonals)and they have about 100 different bottles. Definitely worth a trip if you are in the area. It is more of a restaurant than a bar. Bar area only has 10-12 seats/stools

LIBME nights at other places would be good. I would like to encourage other members to help organize (it's not that hard really) outings to their own neighborhood pubs.

Donovan, thanks for the comment. I'm no longer exactly ROW, but I'm staying in Tarrytown in Westchester County until I find a place on the Island. I've had to rule out Massapequa because it does not have a full day kindergarten. We're looking in Hewlett, Woodmere, Valley Stream, Rockville Centre, Lynbrook, Oceanside and a few other places right now. I will definitely be at some of the events when I get there. I'm hoping to make the South Shore Real Beer Fest for sure. And I will make it to Deks too, though, like some others have mentioned, I hope we can have some LIBME nights in other places too.
