Craft brew notes and observations Part I
Here are some thoughts and observations: How do we define craft beer - Craft beer is hard to categorize. domestic beers using 100% malted barley rather than rice or corn. Since craft beer in the U.S. has a 4% market share, there is definetely room to grow. Check this intersting report about Oregon. The same can be done on Long Island. There are now two breweries on Long Island, Bluepoint and Southampton. There is room for more quality, long Island brewers using locally grown hops, barley and other ingredients. Marketing is very important, distribution and education.
Portland, Oregon has 28 microbreweries within its city limits which is more than any other city in the world. The Guild anticipates four more breweries opening within the city limits in 2007, bringing the total to 32.
The Portland metro area is the largest craft brewing market in the United States (U.S.). It is the only area to sell more than 1,000,000 cases of micro brewed beer according to Information Resources Inc. Seattle and San Francisco are the second and third largest markets respectively.
“Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world. Portland is the largest craft beer market in the U.S. Oregon is the second largest producer of craft beer in the U.S. and Oregon is the second largest craft beer market in the U.S. No wonder Oregon is known as Beervana and is a destination for craft beer lovers from all over the U.S. and the world” said Brian Butenschoen, Executive Director of the Oregon Brewers Guild.
A friend of mine drank mostly Pilsner Urquil (a very good beer maybe a little boring having the same beer over and over). He likes going to Croxley's and trying different beers lately. He likes Hoptical Illusion and almost all the Bluepoint and Brooklyn beers. He also liked the Southampton Espresso Stouit. About 2 years ago my friend Bob said "I don't drink any Anheiser Busch products."
It's an education process for myself and the beer consumer. We've been conditioned to drink a "cold beer" - letting a beer warm a bit definetely makes it taste better. Try a Wolovers Oatmeal Stout or Troegs Pale Ale let it sit for 20 minutes, the Wolovers has a hint of coffee taste that comes out, theTroegs just tastes better. I've really appreciated the taste of a good cask beer. My favorites the Oakham Bishop and the Saaz single hop from the Check republic.
Every other Tuesday me and four other friends get together to talk and have a couple beers and some snaks from 8 PM - 11PM. It is called Frühschoppen (German meaning early morning after church get together to talk and drink). Since I've been serving Troegs, Bluepoint and Brooklyn beers lately one person in the group said "I'm serving something different today" He purchased a six pack of Brooklyn Monster Ale - A good beer and we had an excellent brew crew meeting with many topics of interest discussed.
what I like about craft brews is that you can go to different parts of the country and taste different craft brews that you can't get where you live. When I was up in Altoona PA at a railfest, the first night they had a band playing and a fireworks show and they served Railbender Ale. It was very good. It is made by Erie Brewing Co. in Erie PA and is an old Ale style beer.
I just when upstate this past weekend to my summer home near Middletown, NY. On the way up I stopped at a Wine and Beer shop called Bottle King. What I found is that they were selling Clipper City Brewing Heavy Seas beers. (Brewmaster Hugh Sisson of Clipper City Fireplace Beer and How to drink A beer blog fame) I purchased a sixer of Heavy Seas Uber Pils and Jigsaw Pinot Noir (Oregon makes the best Pinot Noir in the country - disputed by Caifornia).
Part II will discuss my thoughts and opinions If I opened a brewery on Long Island, incorporation of business naming beers, having a bier Garden and tasting room. what flagship style and regular beers, bottle or not to bottle. Extreme beers.
