I was at Rattle'N'Hum yestersay between 7and 8:30. It was so crowded at 6:30 me and my friend Jim decided to get somethingh to eat. I will post some photos. We had Dales pale ale, Elysion Imort IPA and Captain Lawrence Xtra Gold (10%) on cask. Stone…

Brazen Head Cask Ale Festival Review

Went to the Brazen Head Cask Ale Festival last night. It's the 1st time I went to the Brazen Head. It's a nice place. Everybody was very friendly. As soon as I got in I bought 2 10oz tickets. the 1st 2 beers I had was the Cape Ann's Fisherman's navigator and the Otter Creek Sea Otter Baltic Porter ( very tasty almost like a stout). The Green Flash West Coast IPA (you can smell the hops before dinking a very strong tasty beer). A must try beer, very unusual. Since I'm a big fan of Stoudts beers (took a tour of the brewery) I had to try the Scarlet Lady ESB - 1st sip is on the bitter side, as I got use to the taste it went down smoother. All the beers were very good. Alex Hall was serving the beer with 2 helpers. His wife was there also, both very friendly, I got there 7ish last night, very good crowd but not overcrowded. At 10PM when I left no casks had emptied, but I heard the Sea Otter was getting low. It was not as crowded as last year, I overheard the owner mention that last year the NY Times wrote an article about the upcoming brewfest.
Kelly and Sonya from Kelso Brewery were there. Chris from Chelsea Brewery was in attendance (he gave me a free drink ticket) I also met a couple of employees and the brewer from Sixpoint. Chatted with a couple of other beer enthusiasts.
All in all a very good cask Ale festival. Got to try some good beer for not a lot of money. I'd recommend heading out if you can.

BEER POETRY FROM SMUTYNOSE BREWERY

POETRY CORNER
We're not sure why, but our beers have inspired some to wax poetic. How about you. Perhaps after reading this you might be moved to submit a bit of your own Old Brown Doggerel?

An Ode to Perfection
With the adjective Smutty applied to your nose
It's an effort of love to come up with the prose
To tell all the world with lips pure and true
Of the excellent taste of your quality brew.

The Malamute's far from where Cy and Old Paul
Are whooping it up and having a ball
But the bottl… Continue

Beer roadtrip/local and not so local beer

Last summer I went to a Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets minor League single A) game with my friend Phil and his daughter. I bought some Italian sausage heroes for everyone. My friend Phil went to the concession stand and brought back two Brooklyn Lagers on tap. That was a really good tasty beer from a keg that was just tapped. There is nothing like a fresh local beer on tap from a local beer (unless it a was on cask). I first tasted Brooklyn Brown Ale at the Race Palace in Plainview. In the summer they… Continue

Craft Brew Notes and Observations Part II

As mentioned at the end of Part I in the Craft Brew Notes and Observations series I said I would be discussing the following: If I opened my own brewey in Nassau County (there are no breweries in Nassau County that I know of now). Naming beers, bier Garden, tasting room, flagship style of beer (i.e. Bluepoint Toasted Lager, Southampton Secrtet Ale). Extreme beers, big beers.

If I started my own brewery I would call it the H. Walter Brewing Company. I would have a brewery and brewpub. Something… Continue

Craft Brew Notes & Observations part II

Section 1. Business Incorporation

The first thing I want to talk about is incorporating a business. The best thing to do is set up your business as a regular corporation (sometimes referred to as a C corporation. Then I would fill out the state and federal forms to make it an S corporation. If you have 2 partners each person would get a form K1 at the end of the year. Each person would take the profit or loss and put it on their individual return and it would be taxed at the personal rate rathe… Continue

Craft brew notes and observations Part I

Here are some thoughts and observations: How do we define craft beer - Craft beer is hard to categorize. domestic beers using 100% malted barley rather than rice or corn. Since craft beer in the U.S. has a 4% market share, there is definetely room to grow. Check this intersting report about Oregon. The same can be done on Long Island. There are now two breweries on Long Island, Bluepoint and Southampton. There is room for more quality, long Island brewers using locally grown hops, barley and oth… Continue

Walter,
When you commented back to Randy, you hit the wrong button. He never got that. You replied to yourself.
Just Letting you know. It was good seeing you on Sat. I liked the "how to drink a beer" I will post it on my blog sometime soon.

Hi Randy,

It was nice meeting you also, on the way home I stopped off at Bluepoint Brewery, had a pint of Spring Fling for $5.00 and you get to keep the glass. Can't beat that. They sold a lot of the He'Brew beers. I liked the Jewbilation 10 the best. I bought that and the RIPA.
